OUR MISSION
NYC Salt empowers young artists from underserved communities in New York City through intensive photography and video education, mentorship, and career preparation. By combining professional instruction with college and career support, we create pathways for students to thrive in the arts and beyond.
WHY "SALT"
The Salt Print was one of the earliest methods of turning a negative image into a positive print, using paper soaked in salt and silver solution. Salt, which transforms and preserves, is integral to both photography and the visual arts. Our program draws on salt’s transformative power, using it as a metaphor for how photographs preserve memories and shape the world. By partnering with underserved communities in NYC, we immerse young artists in this creative process, fostering growth and connection through the arts.

HISTORY
In 2005, Alicia Hansen, a professional photographer with over 25 years of experience, started Salt as a small photography class for eight teenagers in Washington Heights. Inspired by her work on National Geographic’s first digital story, she saw how photography and visual literacy could expand opportunities for underserved youth. By 2008, NYC Salt became a 501c3 nonprofit, providing deep engagement through top equipment, professional instruction, mentorship, and college preparation.
